How to Get Judith to Drink Milk

So I have quite a few recipes backlogged for you, but I thought I would go ahead and share my beverage from Friday night. Proving that I am a complete nerd, I had absolutely zero interest in getting smashed Saturday morning for the football game like the rest of Iowa City (I didn't even realise until Saturday night that it had been homecoming and that's why there were so many people in my way when I went to the law school in the afternoon) but I did want a cocktail for debate-watching on Friday. Good old Rachel Maddow proposed a drinking game on her Air America radio show, so I decided to be a good little lesbian and play along. Trouble is, I needed a drink, and something weak enough that I wouldn't get drunk by taking a sip every time John McCain said "prison, chair, or table" and everytime Obama mentioned Main Street or Wall Street. So this is what I came up with. A white chocolate cherry... glass of alcoholic milk.

Judith's Calcium-Fortified Debate Cocktail

About half a shot of Smirnoff black cherry vodka (I didn't measure)
About twice that of white chocolate Irish cream
Milk

Pour the liquors in, fill the rest of the glass with milk, and stir. Everything should be well-chilled and I hear if you mix creamy things with cheap vodka, it might curdle, so use the good stuff.

Judith, You're So Smooth!

Yes, another smoothie post. I did a lot of experimenting with different combinations. I tried one that was a variation of something I saw on Tastespotting featuring a couple of kiwis, strawberry, and banana, but I found that the frozen strawberry taste was nothing like fresh. The one below ended up being pretty good, despite that, but I think part of it is just that using frozen fruits makes it more like ice cream. The banana provides the thickening. The trick is to drink it before it melts, and tastes like plain old smoothie. I also tried just a plain old peach smoothie, with regular peaches, and the lack of peach taste was surprising. I could mostly taste the honey. Go figure.

Frozen Berry Smoothie
(makes one serving)

about 8 whole frozen strawberries
a handful of fresh blueberries
half a frozen banana
1/4 cup (approximate) skim milk
a few squirts of honey
a couple tablespoons of wheat germ

Pulse all the ingredients except for the milk first, until a puree forms, to avoid milk spraying around the kitchen out the sides of the food processor. Add the milk and blend until smooth. Enjoy immediately.

Moooo!

It's not often that someone just shows up with something for me to blog about, but Rita's done it twice! The other day, when I asked for her assistance in consuming the Cherry Garcia cocktails, I asked if she could pick up some skim milk. I had lots and lots of granola, but no milk. This is obviously a tragedy of epic proportions. "What kind of milk do you want?" Rita asked. "Skim," says I. "Hey, you should try this new milk!" "New milk?" "Alena told me about it! It's organic milk, made by Christians. You can blog about it." Me: "..."

So half an hour later, Rita indeed showed up on my doorstep with organic, homemade (well, homemade as you can get in the store), authentic Christianmilk. And it is, indeed, quite tasty. Goes great with hippie organic granola from Target. It expires sooner than regular milk, but that probably has to do with the lack of scary unidentifiable ingredients contained therein. I'll drink to that! Don't forget - A Vegetarian Picnic Feat entries due this Friday, July 4th! No entries yet, so it may just be me. Come on, folks, whip up a salad or something! I'd love to have you.
